DAVIES R. B.

About 1910 the stock and station agency of Elder, Shenton and Co., Ltd., opened its doors with young looking Rowland Botherill Davies as the manager. He was to become known in the district a "R.B." At first he and the National Bank manager, Reg. Hughes, shared a tent until more substantial accommodation was supplied. Each night they slept with their branch's takings and a revolver under their pillows. On 4th October at St. George's Cathedral, by his Lordship, the Bishop of Perth, assisted by the Rev. Minor Canon Foster and the Rev. Lionel Parry, married Rowland Botherill Davies, of Gnowangerup, to Ethel Rose Clifton, second (third) daughter of Robert Cecil Clifton, of Adelaide Terrace, Perth. and brought her to live in a stone cottage behind his office in Yougenup Road.  mother's arms.

The handfull of Gnowangerup residents gave the newlyweds a tin-kettling and city-bred Mrs. Davies, who had never heard of such a custom, was greatly alarmed when the racket began. R. B, moved around the district by horse and sulky at first and it was by this slow form of transport that the young couple travelled frantically to Katanning in order to consult Dr. F. M. House about their first delicate baby, only to have the child die in the tearful
